CRW tackled this crucial project on Camrose Drive in Anchorage recently and the results (as you can see) have been fantastic. CRW led the design effort to upgrade the deteriorating storm drain system on Camrose Drive and improve the overall drainage in the neighborhood. The storm drain upgrades resolved significant flooding that occurred seasonally during spring break up and large rain events. Before CRW's improvements, the Municipality of Anchorage's Street Maintenance crew would have to drive a vac truck to the neighborhood which was so loud that residents needed earplugs inside their homes!

Improvements to bring this two-mile-long section of hillside road to Municipality of Anchorage collector standards and provide a safer road corridor involved engineering investigations, public involvement, permitting, utility coordination, surveying and mapping, transportation planning, and multiple stream crossing designs. Hydraulic modeling to solve drainage problems involved the analysis of a contributing drainage area of 4,079 acres.

Two existing 78-inch-diameter corrugated metal pipe culverts that conveyed fish passage of Chester Creek beneath Providence Drive were replaced with a precast open-bottomed concrete pipe arch. Storm drain systems on either side of the creek were improved and utilities were supported and worked around. Construction also involved a temporary diversion of the creek.

Location: Anchorage, AK

Rehabilitation of this mile-long section of trail to improve safety and connectivity included replacement of four pedestrian bridges, installation of flood plain boardwalks, construction of a large retaining wall, and upgrades to the illumination system. A flood elevation model of the creek channel was created to determine flood water elevations. A drainage analysis was conducted on the surrounding 1,547 acres of contributing area.
