Geotechnical Investigation in Support of Horizontal Directional Drilling Design for a Private Development at ANC

Location: ANC

CRW planned and oversaw a geotechnical investigation to support the design of a buried fuel pipeline to be installed by horizontal directional drilling (HDD). This design required continuous characterization of the subsurface to a depth of over 80 feet below the active runways at ANC. CRW coordinated with ANC Operations and three subcontractors to clear utilities, drill two boreholes, and perform geotechnical and environmental sampling during brief runway closures, minimizing the impact on airport activities. Using newly-acquired data supplemented with historical soils data from other areas of the proposed 3500-foot project corridor, CRW provided engineering recommendations for entry and exit excavations and subsurface characteristics pertinent to HDD operations and design, including lithology, consistency, permeability, and swell potential.
