CITY & BOROUGH OF SITKA CRITICAL SECONDARY WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

Location: Sitka, AK

This project included the design of a new water intake and 6 MGD water treatment plant (WTP). The new WTP serves as a secondary water supply to Sitka’s existing unfiltered source, helping them offset nearly $500,000/year in operating cost of a full time filter plant. To minimize initial cost, energy usage, and maintenance, transfer fans were installed that utilized the natural cooling from the water treatment equipment to cool the heat-generating equipment. Work included efficient and space saving design options to support the complicated process systems. Due to the low cost of electricity, mild climate, and space constraints, electric unit heaters were installed throughout the facility to provide heating. Electric unit heaters resulted in the lowest life-cycle cost for heating the facility.
