This project is a great example of CRW’s execution of the MOA Context Sensitive Solutions/Context Sensitive Design guidelines for transportation and decision-making. The project is responding to future Alaska DOT&PF plans to construct an extension of 92nd Avenue under the Seward Highway, resulting in higher volumes along Academy Drive and at the Vanguard/Abbott Road intersection. The MOA project is adjacent to numerous business and residential properties, while the ADOT&PF project will increase volumes at high-crash intersection of Abbott Road and Vanguard Drive. CRW approached the public involvement with a plan for success by developing great working relationships with area business owners through a series of informational Business Stakeholder work sessions and “open house” drop-by public meetings. The business stakeholder events allowed local businesses to meet with the project team to receive project updates through detailed presentations early and often, provide input on various alternatives, and share local knowledge. To best serve the needs of the public, the project team along with the ADOT&PF project team held serveral combined public open houses to showcase the adjacent projects, provide information, and collect public feedback. Area residents, employees of nearby businesses, business stakeholders, and nearby property owners were invited to attend the open house events.
