Welcome to the Independence Drive Improvement Project.

This project began as a simple pavement resurfacing effort to improve the road surface and drainage along Independence Drive.
As the design began to take shape, the project team and community residents identified the need for sidewalk repairs, accessibility improvements for people with disabilities, and for an evaluation of traffic calming measures that address speeding concerns. To address these concerns, the Municipality of Anchorage increased the project funding and construction of the improvements began in the summer of 2008.
Work completed in 2008 included improvements from the southern end of Independence Drive where the existing pavement ends to Colony Loop north:
- New pavement, curbs, and gutters
- Replacement of the existing sidewalk on the west side to Jamestown Drive
- A new storm drain system
- Traffic calming to discourage speeding
Work to be finished in 2009 includes:
- New pavement, curbs, and gutters from Colony Loop north to Abbott Road
- New curb ramps and pedestrian crosswalks
- Replacement of the existing sidewalk and pathway along both sides of the road
- New storm drain system from Colony Loop to Abbott
- Traffic calming to discourage speeding
- New lighting
- New transit stops with pedestrian lighting
